Course Overview

A typical day will involve a flight of 1.5-2 hours followed by ground training.  At the middle of your training we take a fun break to accomplish your cross-country requirements and fly to one of several destinations that meet the requirements.  We fly back that night having then completed your Commercial Pilot requirements for the cross-country phase.  

Aeronautical Requirements

FAR 91.109 governs the commercial pilot rating

  • Basic Requirements
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
    • Pass the required knowledge (written) test
  • Aeronautical Requirements
    • 250 hours of flight time
    • 100 hours of PIC time
    • 50 hours of cross-country
    • 20 hours of flight training which includes:
      • 10 hours instrument training
      • 10 hours complex aircraft training*
      • 2 hour cross-country flight >100nm, daytime
      • 2 hour cross-country flight >100nm, nighttime
      • 3 hours of flight training in preparation of the practical test
    • 10 hours solo flight training to include:
      • 1 SOLO cross-country flight >300nm with stops at 3 points
      • 5 hours SOLO night VFR with 10 T/O’s and Landings
  • If you would like to combine your complex, high performance, and commercial training, this is possible for an additional cost and are conducted in the Beech Debonair.

Course Prerequisites

In order to start the Commercial Accelerated course, you will need to have completed the following prerequisites. If you need assistance with completing these prior to the course, reach out to us and we will work with you to get them completed. It is your responsibility to ensure the prerequisites are completed prior to starting the course with us.

  • FAR 91.109 | Written Test Completed
  • FAR 91.129 | Solo Cross-Country (> 300nm with the first landing > 250nm from point of departure)

Course Schedule

The Commercial Pilot training course is a 5-Day course which includes both ground and air work.  The 5-day course can be done in either a 5-day straight scenario or separately with the following structure:

  • Day 1 | Systems & Basic Commercial Maneuvers
    • Flight Instruction
    • Ground Instruction 
  • Day 2 | Commercial Maneuvers
    • Flight Instruction
    • Ground Instruction 
  • Day 3 | Commercial Cross-Country Requirements
    • Dual Day VFR Flight (100nm)
    • Dual Night IFR Flight (100nm)
  • Day 4 | Putting it all together
    • Flight Instruction
    • Ground Instruction
  • Day 5 | Mock Check-Ride
    • Flight Instruction (Mock Check-Ride)
    • Ground Instruction (Mock Oral)
  • Day 6 | Check Ride!

This is an all-inclusive course. Commercial courses are taught exclusively by our chief instructor. The course cost covers your membership in Plus One Flyers, aircraft rental, as well as all ground and flight instruction and is based on the location selected. The aircraft utilized depend on location and time of year. We generally utilize a Lake Amphibian (Seaplane) in Sandpoint, and a variety of aircraft in San Diego. The Sandpoint course will include your Complex endorsement.

Examiners are booked once the course is confirmed. Examiners fees are paid directly to the examiner and not included in the cost of the course.

Locations Available

The following locations are available for your Commercial Course at various times throughout the year. Cost and availability are available on the registration page.

  • San Diego, CA (KMYF)
    • This location is offered throughout the year
  • Sandpoint, ID (KSZT)
    • This location is offered May-September
    • Training is accomplished in a Lake Amphibian.
      • You will have two check rides, an ASES and an ASEL. At the conclusion, you will be a Commercial Pilot, Airplane Single Engine Land & Sea.
      • If you are moving on to your CFI, you will be able to instruct in ASES aircraft should you so desire.
    • A Complex Endorsement is provided.
    • 10 Hours per 61.129 in complex included.

Payment Terms and Conditions

A $500 non-refundable deposit is due when booking the course and the balance on Day 1. HFA accepts all major credit cards, cash, check. A 5% discount is applied for cash customers.
